Post-Election Advocacy Update
As our advocacy team continues to analyze the 2024 election results and their potential impact on our policy priorities as an organization, we wanted to reach out to share what we currently know about the next Congress and administration and our plans for ensuring that the bipartisan issues on which we work will be prioritized in the coming years.
With the majority of the results now in, we currently know that Donald Trump will be the 47th President and that the Republicans will have the majority in the U.S. Senate. There are several House races yet to be called that will determine whether Democrats or Republicans are in leadership in the U.S. House of Representatives.
At HPNA, elections are a reminder that both our mission–advancing nursing expertise in hospice and palliative care through education, advocacy, leadership, and research–and our vision–that every person living with serious illness receives equitable, comprehensive, and innovative hospice and palliative nursing care–remain constant and relevant. As always, we are planning for the incoming Congress and new administration to ensure that our bipartisan priorities are most effectively communicated and moved forward.
In the coming days and weeks, we will be communicating with Members of Congress, transition team leaders and senior staff working at the federal level impacting hospice and palliative care. We also will continue to work with our national partner organizations and coalitions to advance policies to improve access to care, support palliative care research and training, address workplace violence, and support the nursing workforce and nursing education. If you are already participating in HPNA’s advocacy work, thank you! Please continue to share your stories and engage with policymakers on legislative and regulatory issues. This community has the power to truly make a difference for so many people across the country.
If you are new to advocacy and policy, we invite you to join our advocacy network, which will keep you informed of action on our legislative and regulatory priorities and opportunities to engage with your lawmakers, such as our current call to action urging legislators to extend telehealth flexibilities that will expire in December. We also encourage you to participate in our State Ambassadors program, where you can network with other members interested in state and federal advocacy and help spread the word about HPNA’s public policy initiatives.
As always, thank you for your support of HPNA’s advocacy work, and we look forward to working together to continue raising our voices and advancing policies that support the nursing workforce and increase access to quality hospice and palliative care.
