The Hospice and Palliative Nurses Foundation (HPNF) has been a catalyst of education, innovation, and professional development for nurses caring for our nation’s most vulnerable patients since 1998. Donations at every level enable the non-profit organization to impact the careers of thousands of nurses, provide grants and scholarships to increase education and certification, and support initiatives and research that strengthen our communities and advance our profession.

Every gift helps our mission become a reality. From awarding scholarships and grants to funding resources and initiatives, HPNF works to identify and respond to mission-centered opportunities.

It is with tremendous appreciation that I was a recipient of a scholarship to attend the 2022 Annual Assembly of Hospice and Palliative Care. Although this year’s meeting was held remotely, I feel I was able to connect to peers and network, one of our professional privileges. I found this year’s presenters robust with knowledge and an eagerness to share. I also found this year’s content limited in representing hospice and palliative nursing. I synthesized many of my medical colleagues’ research and am thankful for their continued work in our profession. As a doctor of nursing, I hope to one-day share a contribution to the research within hospice and palliative nursing. I am grateful for the opportunity to share my insight and even more grateful for this year’s experience, and I look forward to many more.

I loved all of the sessions I was able to attend during the Annual Assembly for Hospice and Palliative Care. I wanted to attend all of them live but since I could not be in all of them at once, I am watching them as on-demand sessions. I learned so much and am continuing to learn more as I complete more sessions. My favorite live session was with Dr. Adam B Hill. His honest approach to sharing all that he had been through was refreshing. The rate of suicide among doctors and nurses is astounding to me. As a rule, healthcare professionals are passionate about caring for people and want to do whatever they can to help, often to their own detriment. It was uplifting to hear someone say that it is okay to say “I’m not okay” and to say no to taking on too much in order to protect and preserve our own mental health.

I am grateful for the opportunity to attend this year’s Annual Assembly of Hospice of Palliative Care, thanks to the Cynthia Stutzer Memorial Scholarship from HPNF and APHON. The assembly allowed me to learn about a wide range of palliative care topics related to addressing the physiologic, psychosocial, and spiritual needs of patients with serious illnesses and their caregivers. I have already been able to start putting into practice what I learned from the many impressive presenters, and I will continue to use this valuable knowledge to better serve my pediatric and AYA hematology/oncology patients.

The Annual Assembly showcased experts in hospice and palliative care through engaging discussion and presentations that provided the latest evidence-based practice. I gained knowledge from practice areas across many different clinical settings, which allowed me to reflect on how I can implement change in my own practice. I would recommend this conference to all nurses caring for patients with serious illness. The Judy Lentz Scholarship provided an exciting opportunity to learn innovative practices from experts and incorporate their knowledge and experiences to improve outcomes in oncology patients.
