G-Cares: Graduate Competencies and Recommendations for Educating Nursing Students in Primary Palliative Care

Presented by Polly Mazanec, PhD, ACNP-BC, AOCN, ACHPN, FPCN, FAAN

This presentation is designed to provide learners with access to the NEW graduate competencies for educating masters and doctorate nursing practice students in primary palliative care. These competencies, essential for all graduate level nursing students, recognize the need to prepare advanced practice nurses and future leaders in nursing to provide primary care to their patients with common palliative care needs. The long-term outcome is to prepare students to address the uncomplicated needs of millions of patients with serious illness and their families and refer to specialty palliative care when the needs are complex.

Dr. Mazanec is a Research Associate Professor at Case Western Reserve University’s Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing in Cleveland, OH, and a Co-Investigator on a Web-based intervention for long-distance caregivers of patients with advanced cancer. She has been on the ELNEC facility since 2001 and is the Co-PI and Project Director for Dr. Betty Ferrell’s ELNEC Cambia Health Foundation funded nursing education project. Dr. Mazanec has also been a member of the HPNA Board of Directors since January 2017.

This presentation was recorded on April 17, 2019, and is available through HPNA University.
