Grants and Scholarships

The Hospice and Palliative Nurses Foundation provides professional development opportunities to qualified members of the hospice and palliative care team, including scholarships for education, conferences, and specialty certification, along with nursing research grants and leadership awards. The full catalog of scholarships and grants are listed below. 
 

Certification Scholarships

These scholarships provide reimbursement of certification fees to eligible individuals, and are valid for those earning a new Hospice and Palliative Credentialing Center certification or those who are renewing their current HPCC certification.  Recipients are determined on a monthly basis, and are usually given with a preference for at least one at each level of certification.  Those who do not receive this scholarship can reapply in the following month.

Chapter Education Grants

The Hospice and Palliative Nurses Foundation promotes hospice and palliative nursing at the local level through Chapter Education Grants. The purpose of these grants is to benefit HPNA chartered chapter members through education or to expand chapter membership.

Conference Scholarships

The conference scholarship program was established to provide financial assistance to nursing professionals who plan on attending HPNA sponsored conferences. These include the Annual Assembly, Clinical Practice Forum, HPNA sponsored End-of-Life Nursing Education Consortium (ELNEC) events, and both CHPN and ACHPN certification review courses. Deadlines for these are usually several months before each specific event date.

Individual Education Scholarships

These were established to provide financial assistance for nursing professionals earning their academic degrees, and to support nursing professionals who are advancing their career through academic achievement. Six scholarships are offered to HPNA members, and are directed to nurses at all levels of nursing education, from entry level though graduate degrees (i.e. associate, bachelors, masters, doctorate). These scholarships may be used for, but not limited to, tuition, books, computer software, and supplies that are related to nursing education.

Judy Lentz Scholarship for the Advancement of Palliative Care in Oncology Nursing

The purpose of this scholarship is to enhance nursing excellence in palliative care. Registered nurses who are members of the Oncology Nursing Society will receive a conference registration and travel stipend to the Annual Assembly, and a one year new or renewed HPNA membership.  This prestigious scholarship is offered once annually, and is named after Judy Lentz, retired CEO for the organization.

PDIA Nursing Leadership Award in Palliative Care

The focus of this award is to transform our society's medical culture and give priority to education, training, and clinical service in end of life care issues. In accordance with a grant from the Project on Death in America (PDIA), HPNF selects a nurse from nominated candidates who is a leader in palliative care and whose work has improved nursing care for dying patients and their families.  The awardee receives a cash prize, is recognized at the Annual Assembly, and receives travel related expenses to attend the event.  The awardee also is encouraged to submit an article for publication in a future issue of the Journal of Hospice and Palliative Nursing

Pediatric Palliative Care Opportunites

Through a grant from the Y.C. Ho/Helen & Michael Chaing Foundation, the Hospice and Palliative Nurses Foundation is offering over 100 professional opportunities for pediatric nursing professionals, including certification and review courses, HPNA membership, pediatric nursing publications, and attendance at a future ELNEC Pediatric Palliative Care Train-the-Trainer course.  There are 25 opportunities in each category, with scholarships given monthly, and applicants can apply for multiple scholarships within these opportunities.

Research Grant Opportunities

HPNF offers several opportunities for research grants, including two yearly grants to nurses benefiting hospice and palliative care nursing, as well as several one-time research grants as they become available.  The two yearly grants include the HPNF Certification Research Grant, and the End-of-Life Nursing Care Research Grant through a partnership with Sigma Theta Tau International (STTI).
