Hospice and Palliative Accrual for Recertification
Recertification for the CHPN certificant is through Hospice and Palliative Accrual for Recertification (HPAR), which requires fulfilling practice hour requirements, accumulating required points through various professional development activities, and completing the Situational Judgment Exercise (SJE). Each category varies as to how the points are calculated and how many of the total points can be obtained. Each activity MUST correlate with the test content outline as published in the CHPN Candidate Handbook.
The SJE is a required component of the CHPN recertification process. It uses a series of case-based scenarios to test critical reasoning and clinical application of content beyond the level of the initial certification exam. The SJE provides an in-depth assessment of the approach taken by the CHPN to handle the complexity of real-life clinical situations. In addition to assessment and treatment decision making, it also tests on ethical and professional topics including team building, communication, public policy and research. For more details, please

The SJE is available through PSI and you may need to create a password for the site at no charge to purchase the SJE. Follow the link to

The Next Generation Learning Plan for Recertification
HPCC is proud to announce The Next Generation Learning Plan for Recertification. Beginning October 13, 2020, all online courses completed through HPNA University and the POLARIS modules will automatically sync with your learning plan, eliminating the need for you to manually enter course details. Within an hour of completing an HPNA online course, your information will appear in LearningBuilder, saving you valuable time.
Automatic syncing is not retroactive, and online courses completed before October 13, 2020 will need to be manually entered into your learning plan. Our hope is that the new automatic syncing feature will be easy to use, save you time, and be more convenient for all certificants working through the recertification process.
Information to note:
Check your learning plan to be sure no information has been duplicated, which could result in a discrepancy in the number of HPAR points you have.
Online courses outside of HPNA will still need to be manually entered into your learning plan.
Certification review courses through HPNA will not automatically sync.
Reporting Period for HPAR
The reporting period for HPAR points is also known as the ‘accrual period’. The reporting period in which you can earn points for CHPN renewal is your certification begin date through the time that you submit your application. The submission period is 10 months long. You may submit your HPAR application beginning 12 months before your expiration date, up to 2 months before your expiration date. If you collect points and/or submit your application during the extended deadline period (during the 2 months prior to your certification expiration date), an additional application fee will be assessed. If you do not submit your HPAR application, your CHPN certification will expire on the expiration date. If your certification expires you may be eligible for reactivation of your expired credential. Refer to CHPN HPAR instructions or
download the HPAR FAQs . If you have any questions, please contact the national office at 412-787-1057 or via email at
