Certified Hospice and Palliative Care Administrator (CHPCA) Recertification
Beginning on January 1, 2018, the Hospice and Palliative Credentialing Center discontinued offering this certification by examination. Recertification of this credential will still be available using the Hospice and Palliative Accrual for Recertification (HPAR) process, as listed below.
The Certified Hospice and Palliative Care Administrator (CHPCA) credential was designed for experienced hospice and palliative health care administrators. Initial applicants had the equivalent of two years of full-time administrative work in a hospice or palliative setting in the three years leading up to their initial certification.

Hospice and Palliative Accrual for Recertification
HPCC offers one option for CHPCA recertification, by using a process known as the Hospice and Palliative Accrual for Recertification (HPAR). The HPAR process requires fulfilling practice hour requirements and the accumulation of 100 points of professional development activities over the preceding four years. Points can be accrued through continuing education, academic education, professional publications, professional presentations, precepting students, orienting staff, and volunteer service in professional organizations. Each area varies as to how the points are calculated and how many of the total points can be obtained by that method. More details and instructions are in the HPAR packet for CHPCA.
Online Submission of HPAR via LearningBuilder
HPAR applications for CHPCA recertification can now be submitted online through LearningBuilder software. This option was developed to be user-friendly and to allow candidates to submit their application in a timely fashion with ease and use of modern technology. Click here for the LearningBuilder Guide
and the CHPCA HPAR packet
. Paper applications for HPAR will still be accepted now through December 2019, but all HPAR submissions after that date will be done online. If you have any questions, please contact the national office at 412-787-1057 or via email at firstname.lastname@example.org
The Next Generation Learning Plan for Recertification
All online courses completed through HPNA University and the POLARIS modules will automatically sync with your learning plan, eliminating the need for you to manually enter course details. Within an hour of completing an HPNA online course, your information will appear in LearningBuilder, saving you valuable time.
Automatic syncing is not retroactive, and online courses completed before October 13, 2020, will need to be manually entered into your learning plan. We hope that the new automatic syncing feature will be easy to use, save you time, and be more convenient for all certificants working through the recertification process.
Information to note:
Check your learning plan to be sure no information has been duplicated, which could result in a discrepancy in the number of HPAR points you have.
Online courses outside of HPNA will still need to be manually entered into your learning plan.
Certification review courses through HPNA will not automatically sync.
Reporting Period for HPAR
The reporting period for HPAR points is also known as the 'accrual period’. The reporting period in which you can earn points for CHPCA renewal is your certification begin date through the time that you submit your application. You may submit your HPAR application beginning 12 months before your expiration date, up to 2 months before your expiration date. If you collect points and/or submit your application during the extended deadline period (during the 2 months prior to your certification expiration date), an additional application fee will be assessed. If you do not submit your HPAR application, your CHPCA certification will expire on the expiration date. If your certification expires you may be eligible for reactivation of your expired credential. Refer to CHPCA HPAR instructions or contact the national office at 412-787-1057 or via email at email@example.com
