Certified Hospice and Palliative Licensed Nurse 

The Hospice and Palliative Credentialing Center discontinued offering this certification by examination on January 1, 2018. The examination will be reintroduced on September 1, 2020. 

In July 2019, after careful review and consideration of changes within the hospice and palliative care teams, the HPCC Board approved a role delineation study to be conducted as the first step in reintroducing the Certified Hospice and Palliative Licensed Practical/Vocational Nurse (CHPLN) examination.

The CHPLN examination is designed for experienced hospice and palliative licensed practical/vocational nurses. To be eligible initial applicants must hold a current, unrestricted practical/vocational nursing license in the United States or its territories and have 500 hours of experience in the most recent 12 months or 1,000 hours in the most recent 24 months prior to applying for the examination. 

Recertification of this credential is available using the Hospice and Palliative Accrual for Recertification (HPAR) process, as listed below.



CHPLN® Certification for 2020:   $345  ($250 for HPNA members)

CHPLN® Certification Renewal:   $320  ($225 for HPNA members)

Hospice and Palliative Accrual for Recertification

HPCC offers one option for CHPLN recertification, by using a process known as the Hospice and Palliative Accrual for Recertification (HPAR).  The HPAR process requires fulfilling practice hour requirements and the accumulation of 100 points of professional development activities over the preceding four years. Points can be accrued through continuing education, academic education, professional publications, professional presentations, precepting students, orienting staff, and volunteer service in professional organizations. Each area varies as to how the points are calculated and how many of the total points can be obtained by that method. More details and instructions are in the HPAR packet for CHPLN.

Online Submission of HPAR via LearningBuilder

HPAR applications for CHPLN recertification can now be submitted online through LearningBuilder software. This option was developed to be user friendly and to allow candidates to submit their application in a timely fashion with ease and use of modern technology. Click here for the LearningBuilder Guide and the CHPLN HPAR packet . Reporting Period for HPAR

The reporting period for HPAR points is also known as the ‘accrual period’. The reporting period in which you can earn points for CHPLN renewal is your certification begin date through the time that you submit your application. The submission period is 10 months long.  You may submit your HPAR application beginning 12 months before your expiration date, up to 2 months before your expiration date. If you collect points and/or submit your application during the extended deadline period (during the 2 months prior to your certification expiration date), an additional application fee will be assessed. If you do not submit your HPAR application, your CHPLN certification will expire on the expiration date. If your certification expires you may be eligible for reactivation of your expired credential.
