National Nurses Week Annual Drive

National Nurses Week provides a time for us to reflect and celebrate the amazing work that nurses do on a daily basis, to improve the lives of individuals and their families and ultimately to improve the health of the nation.  The focus on population health, value-based purchasing, and quality outcomes is creating a new healthcare environment.  This environment can be challenging to maneuver in as it is being created, however these new models have embraced the value and significance of palliative care.  This wider appreciation for palliative care and its focus on patient-centered care, care-coordination, and symptom management have affirmed the core principles of palliative nursing.  Hospice and palliative nurses are transforming the care and culture of serious illness.

This year as we honor our nurses, we are also honoring our history by celebrating the 30th anniversary of the Hospice and Palliative Nurses Association.  Over the past 30 years, this association has grown from the vision of a few dedicated individuals to a membership of over 11,500 across the country.  Our members, who have various roles and work in different settings, are making our mission “to advance expert care in serious illness” a reality.

The theme for this year’s National Nurses Week is “Culture of Safety.”  Hospice and palliative nurses, as do nurses in all specialties, provide on-going assessments and interventions to promote patient safety and comfort.

Thank you for the inspirational work that you do and for being a part of our history! In addition to supporting this National Nurses Week drive, I invite you to honor our past, as we create our future by also supporting our $30 for 30 campaign to help support HPNA’s anniversary. We need your financial support. Your gift from $30 to $300, or whatever amount you can donate, supports nurses in attending conferences,  earning specialty certification, attaining advanced degrees, or to conduct research studies.  Please use either National Nurses Week or our $30 for 30 campaign to help honor a colleague, team, or chapter for their contributions in moving our specialty forward.

Our goal is to transform the care and culture of serious illness, with a focus on closing the gap in what could be a critical shortage of hospice and palliative professionals needed to care for the aging Baby Boomer population.
