Writing a Better Abstract
  • Start with a good idea
    • Address the “so what” question
    • Answer the “who cares” question
    • Show how your information addresses a common problem or important gap
  • Grab at the get-go
    • Orient (don’t confuse) the reader with the title
    • Set the stage with the first sentence
    • Put the punch right up front with a strong significance statement and/or strong purpose statement
  • Then don’t smother it
    • Use clear, crisp, precise sentences
    • Stick with action language
    • Be careful about using acronyms
    • Provide data, not promises
    • Give enough information to make the reader want more
  • Cover four areas of content
    • Introduce the problem
    • Describe your novel approach
    • Summarize your amazing results
    • End with an insightful comment
